Barrier boards are a great way to watch and assess how children listen to and follow directions. Use the barrier board along with your own magnets and dry erase markers. Have children retell a story they have heard or create story scenes, demonstrate their knowledge of basic concepts, and more by simply following a sequence of oral directions. Two children can sit opposite each other, listen to and follow the directions, and then compare their scenes or drawings to your actual instructions. Immediately pinpoint strengths and weaknesses in whatever skill you may be targeting.
