Developing Motor Planning Skills
Therapy and sensory toys, tools and aids for babies, kids, children and teens.
Motor planning therapy is all about working out 'how to do something'. It's the brains behind the brawn!!It's how to do a movement, and how to change a movement. Children learn by copying, and they also need to learn by planning their own ways of doing things, and by checking the accuracy of what they did.
Occupational Therapists frequently use a system of 'Goal, Plan, Do, Check' to help teach children motor skills (or any skill for that matter).
* GOAL - The child sets a goal with the therapists' help, eg to balance on 1 leg 5 seconds (goals need to be very clear!).
* PLAN -The 'plan' involves helping the child work out what they need to think about to achieve this goal. We write these things down.
* DO - means do it!
* CHECK - means review how it went.
If it didn't go well then the 'Plan' may need changing. Make the changes and try again. Success is in the Planning! Anyone can use this strategy. Just keep it simple. The resources below are all chosen because they are good for helping children in developing motor planning skills.
