These are children’s key word sign (KWS) flashcards. They are designed to be used to assist pre verbal, non verbal, non speaking children, those with unclear speech or other communication difficulties. The key word signs (KWS) can be used alongside speech, gestures and expressions with key words being signed. Children’s key word signing is an unaided alternative and augmentative communication tool (AAC). Signing assists children to get their needs and wants met as well as to express their personality when they are unable to speak. 

These flashcards have the symbol/ visual communication picture on one side and the sign picture with description on the other. Core words make up the majority of what we say, these 48 flashcards consist of top core words that are also useful for first words we use as children. Signs include:

These Flashcards are made of thick card presented in a durable box. They are A7 Size (7.4cm x 10.5cm). Flashcards are a brilliant versatile tool that can be used at home and out & about. They can be used as or with games making them easily incorporated into everyday routines.

Children’s key word signing is often used with autistic children, children with apraxia, dyspraxia, downs syndrome, neurotypical children with a speech delay, those with anxiety and ever babies that are pre-verbal (sometimes called baby sign). However it can be beneficial to all children especially those that are potential communication partners for children at their home, childcare centre, school or whether they may be.

Children’s key word sign uses signs alongside speech in simplified sentences to encourage communication through both sign and speech. Research has shown that CKWS encourages verbal speech while allowing the child an alternative method of communication.

These core word picture communication symbols with Children’s key word signs are designed to assist pre verbal, non verbal / non speaking children or those who have communication difficulties. These cards are designed to compliment picture / visual communication symbols that may already be being used by your child. They are often very useful for autistic, ADHD or other neurodiverse children.

Please note: While Children’s key word signing uses Auslan signs, Auslan is it’s own separate language with its own grammar, vocabulary and Deaf culture associate with the language.
